This week's invertebrate was found in the backwoods of Washburn, Tennessee.
I'm very embarrassed to admit that I don't know what it is. Since I'm pretty sure it had only two wings, I'm going with some sort of crane fly. There were many other crane flies around, but none was quite this colorful with such a robust abdomen. Perhaps it's a female who hadn't yet laid her eggs.

I think so. I've got another great mimic or actual ichneumon that I snapped REALLY up close in Prospect Park.
Can you recommend a good key for adult diptera?

What a beautiful creature! There are crane flies that mimic wasps, often Icheneumons, and this appears to be one. I've never seen this particular species.
The antennae suggest Syrphidae, which also includes wasp mimics. Did it wiggle the antennae up and down?

it sorta resembles a beast we call Scorpionfly around our parts (texas), though yours is more colorful. anyway, might be a path to follow.

Perhaps it's a beer-drinking male who hadn't yet, well, you know.
