Thursday Invertebrate Blogging: Myriapod Madness
Today's invertebrate is Lithobius sp., the "garden centipede," which is not to be confused with the "house centipede," a loathsome critter that has begun appearing on our floors and walls again as the weather turns warm.
I found the specimen pictured below under a log in Prospect Park. He appears to be heading for the tasty grubs in the upper right corner of the photo.
This fellow was about two inches long. I spotted another of our leggy friends nearby, but she appears to be a different species entirely. I'm not up on my myriapods, so if any of you myriapodologists out there know what it is, please do tell. The body was about an inch long.
A new species of centipede was collected in Central Park during a species inventory in 1998.

something ... I found in our tub
Six of the most dreaded words in the English language.
I bet it was one of those house centipedes.

Wow. Great pictures. Always nice to see stuff like that in its natural habitat--as opposed to something similar I found in our tub a few mornings ago.
